Dial It Down

What

Heating your home is one of the major ways that any household creates carbon pollution. You might not even notice it, but dialing down your heating by one degree has a significant impact on your carbon pollution.

Why

Turning down your thermostat by one degree can reduce your carbon pollution by up to 340kg. And if you change it by 2 degrees or more, the numbers quickly get bigger.

Dialing down your thermostat has other benefits too. Using less energy to heat your home will save you money - depending on where in the world you live, this might be up to US$95 per year for every degree of temperature.

How

If you have a thermostat

Just turn it down! If you feel the difference, you might want to make changes in the clothes you wear around the home - but most people find they adjust without even noticing.

If you don’t have a thermostat

You can still turn down your heating manually. But consider installing a thermostat since this automatically regulates temperature and will keep your home more energy efficient. Smart thermostats often mean greater control, more comfortable homes and even more savings.

If you use air conditioning

In hotter countries, reducing your AC is likely to have significant savings on your carbon pollution. We currently only calculate central heating savings but we’ll be updating this to include AC in future versions of the platform. So if you’re in a hot country - bear with us and you’ll be able to take a version of this step soon.
